What Are You Eating Today? |

Yesterday I saw a Donald Duck cartoon in the Newspaper. Daisy, Uncle Ludwig, Donald and the boys were shopping in a supermarket. Uncle Ludwig says "Life's like a supermarket, the mind is like a shopping cart. It starts out empty. Some fill it with practical things, Some fill it with junk food, Some fill it with gourmet items and when it comes time to check out some people have six items or less. It made me think of what we put into our minds, God's word says in Luke 6:44-45 "Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. The good man brings good things (gourmet) out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things (junk) out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks." So let's have a look at the types of things we put or should put into our hearts and minds. Firstly there is the practical things, the things we think will make us better people or get a better job. There is nothing wrong with that unless it excludes everything else including God's Word. We can become so practical that we are of practically no use in the Kingdom. That is, our Spiritual life is non-existent. We can be a whiz on the computer but without love in our hearts we are nothing but another hacker. We can be the best singer (or Banjo player) but without love it is nothing. We need to find how our practical skills can be used by the Holy Spirit. God has given you those talents and we need to use them for His glory. Secondly there is the junk food we all like eating - but we can not live on. It is the same for our lives. We can fill our minds with mindless games of bang-bang-shooting 'em that require no intelligence to play. We can fill our minds with things that have no place in the life of a Christian. This is what Satan wants us to do, he wants us to take our eyes of f Jesus. He will put things in our path that look good but are designed to distract us from the things of God. Jesus said in Matthew 6: 34 "For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks." So if we have junk in our hearts that is what we will speak and be. Thirdly, there some who do not feed their minds at all. In Australia now we have a crazy going on with young boys that it is Cool to be a Fool. That is, you don't need to learn anything at school. This is a lie of Satan. He would rob them of their future by robbing them of their education. These boys will end up 'in the six items or less lane of life'. I know it is sad but kids are falling for it. Do not be fooled it is not cool to be a fool. God has given us all a mind to use for His glory, so let's use it. Lastly there is Gourmet food, that is God's word. If we meditate on God's word each day we will have such a feast that is rich and pure, and is good for us. We read in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." This the food that God wants us to feed on, food that will equip us to do His will in our lives. We are called to meditate on God's word day and night in Joshua 1:8 "Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful." So here we have a promise of God if we meditate on his Law (word) will prosper in all we do. In Psalm 119: 27 we read "Let me understand the teaching of your precepts; then I will meditate on your wonders." And verse 148 "My eyes stay open through the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promises." So gourmet food is the one that will equip us, teach us, rebuke (bring us to Holiness) us, training us so that we will prosper in the sight of God. So why eat like paupers when we have the best food available to us. Today, what are you going to feed into your mind, junk food, practical food, or starve it or dine on gourmet food that God provides in His Word. The choice is ours to make. I know I would rather eat Caviar than fastfood, drink the best coffee instead of cheap instant coffee. What are you eating today? Amen.
