Ice Cream in a bag

Ice Cream in a bag

Needed:
  Pint size sealable plastic bags
Half-gallon sealable plastic bags
Towel or cloth bag
Ice
Rock salt
Ice cream mix

This recipe will make several individual servings of ice cream. Fruit, candy pieces, or flavored syrup can be added to the bags before shaking.

  1. Mix the ice cream mix as directed and fill the pint size bags about half full. Seal the bag and put in the refrigerator.
  2. Put a pint size bag of ice cream mix inside a half gallon bag. Fill the bag a little over half way with crushed ice and add about a tablespoon of rock salt.
  3. Seal the half gallon bag. Do NOT push the excess air from the bag.
  4. Wrap the half gallon bag in a towel or put in a cloth bag. This is important because the plastic bag will get very cold.
  5. Shake the bag for approximately 5 minutes.
  6. Without opening the half gallon bag, check to see if the ice cream is firm enough. It should get to something resembling a “soft serve” consistency. If needed, shake more until it is firm.
  7. Open the half gallon bag and remove the bag with the ice cream. Before opening the pint bag, wash it off with cold water to remove any salt that may have stuck to the bag.
  8. Open the pint bag and enjoy.

This ice cream is very popular with kids and adults. The ice cream can be mixed/bagged before going on a campout, then shaken and eaten that night. Be sure to keep the ice cream mixture cool until you are ready to use it.

Combine this with homemade rootbeer and everybody will love you!
